Post Sony Reports Sales Down For PS3 Last Quarter - 01-22-2009, 09:26 PM

i was just reading in my february issue of game informer that sony has reported drastic sales decline for november and december 2008. there were 466,000 ps3's sold in november 2007, and only 378,000 in november of 2008. now this could be due to the bad economy, but other gaming consoles saw increases. they are also reporting that they will be closing manufacturing facilities to try and save the company over $1.1 billion dollars by the end of this year. hopefully sony can pick the sales back up!

there may be a couple of reasons why ps3 sales are down. first of all, the new version of the system that is available is not backward compatible. i think that turned off a lot of people because people still want to play their ps2 games, and they still make ps2 games. they are trying to get everyone to convert to ps3, but not everyone can afford it. the second reason why they may be down is because of the poor economy. video games are still booming, but parents are not willing to spend that kind of money for their kids just for fun.

i hope that sony will start to see some of there sales pickup. the lack of sales for sony is starting to hurt there bottom line and now they are going to be cutting at least 5000 jobs. this will not get any better with the economy looking so bad and the out look not much better. sony will have a hard time with most of the items they sell being on the higher end. the ps3 is one of them and that maybe some of the reason for the sales slumps.

well i don't think that sony is going anywhere, it's just due to poor economic times. that and more people have the systems than last year so there is less of a demand for them. i don't think that it has anything to do with not being backwards compatible though, everyone knew that was going to happen eventually.

i know that everyone is hurting out there but do you think if they dropped the price of the ps3 that they may sell more units. the more units that are out there the more software that they can sell and accessories. they do still have the most expensive next gen system out there maybe part of the problem.

what do you guys think?

if i recall, wii sells off store shelves because they cannot keep up with the demand of the systems, and xbox 360 recently had a price cut and now offers a game or two with the system purchase. with those deals and high demand, obviously their sales are going to stay higher. ps3 has always had systems on store shelves and hasn't changed the way they market their system, and it is also the highest priced system around because of the great blu ray technology. it is not a surprise at all.

i am in no way surprised by this news. sony needs to drop the price of the ps 3 to get some more systems out on the market. once they do this they will get some marketing for games and licenses. the more systems out there the more people that are looking to make games for you. why does sony not get it. i hope they will soon or they maybe next to take a tumble.
