Default How do you use HDMI on a home theater if your TV is already plugged into a different HDMI source? - 09-17-2011, 02:12 AM

so basically i want to buy a sony home theater that doesn't have hdmi. i'm wondering why you'd even need hdmi for home theater if the ps3(has only one hdmi output) would have its hdmi going to the tv. if you had another hdmi connect to the tv and then to the home theater, how would that work if you can only select one input at a time?

so basically
ps3----hdmi------tv
hometheater-----hdmi-------tv

tv only takes 1 input at a time. how will you get the ps3's video and audio out to both tv and home theater using just one 1 hdmi(w/o optical out)

what i've always thought of doing(fyi i'm a complete noob at this) is connecting it this way:

ps3---hdmi----tv
ps3----opticalout----home theater

any help? btw the system is the sony bdv-e370

well your last connection would be right. this would allow you to maximize the picture quality going directly to the tv and then the digital audio out to your receiver. now this would only work for one source of course. how are you getting regular tv or high definition tv ?

if you need another source added you will need a hdmi switcher.

the most common connection would be going direct into your receiver hdmi with all sources and then the receiver would have a hdmi out which would go to the tv, this would allow you to select any source on your receiver and it would then send the video out for what ever source you selected and the audio would come out the surround sound system. this of course requires a receiver with hdmi switching.

if it does not have hdmi switching as yours sounds like does not then the way you mentioned lastly would be the best way. if you do need to add more sources then there are hdmi switchers that aren't a lot of money.

the only real issue is the control of the system if you do add more sources. at that point you will want to get a universal remote so you can setup macros so with one button it will turn on all gear, select the right input for both the receiver and tv for the source your wanting to watch, select the right surround setting, and have the volume come to a desired level.

note that many/most tvs will only send stereo pcm over optical no matter what's being sent to the tvs hdmi input. this has been experienced by many people. you could check your tv manual to see if this is mentioned.

so it's usually best to send hdmi to your receiver/hitb if you want proper surround sound. i don't understand why you would want to buy a home theater systems without hdmi inputs, as that's the current connectivity standard for modern av gear and probably will be for a few years.

connect hdmi from ps3 to tv for video then optical cable fro ps3 to home theater system for surround sound, not from tv to home theater system.
