well your last connection would be right. this would allow you to maximize the picture quality going directly to the tv and then the digital audio out to your receiver. now this would only work for one source of course. how are you getting regular tv or high definition tv ?
if you need another source added you will need a hdmi switcher.
the most common connection would be going direct into your receiver hdmi with all sources and then the receiver would have a hdmi out which would go to the tv, this would allow you to select any source on your receiver and it would then send the video out for what ever source you selected and the audio would come out the surround sound system. this of course requires a receiver with hdmi switching.
if it does not have hdmi switching as yours sounds like does not then the way you mentioned lastly would be the best way. if you do need to add more sources then there are hdmi switchers that aren't a lot of money.
the only real issue is the control of the system if you do add more sources. at that point you will want to get a universal remote so you can setup macros so with one button it will turn on all gear, select the right input for both the receiver and tv for the source your wanting to watch, select the right surround setting, and have the volume come to a desired level.
