it's tough to get under $300 for a quality system. speakers are probably the problem here, because it's hard to get a quality 5.1 speaker system (5 speakers and a powered subwoofer) for $300 let alone a full system.
i like yamaha's home theater in a box systems, because they use a real yamaha receiver (a bottom of the line one, but yamaha is well known for the quality of their receiver electronics.)
they are going to include speakers that will do the job, and are probably quite fair for the price you are paying. they will involve compromises, but you must expect this at the price. if someone asked what the minimum system i would recommend, i would be suggesting speakers+sub alone costing around $1000. not because i want people to waste money, but because i feel that's what it takes for a setup most people would be happy with. i understand that not everyone places the same value on high fidelity sound that i do.
