| Wonder If You Might Help Me Set Up My System -

i've been trying to get my system set up for a year and yes, it works but i don't think i'm getting everything out of it that i could.
i have a cisco, digital cable box with no hdmi
i have a philips 1080p hd tv
i have a sony blue ray player
i have a philips surround sound system with only 1 hdmi out and no hdmi inputs.
at present i have the system hooked up like this:
1. the tv cable is coming in and plugged into the digital cable box.
2. from the digital cable box i have a red, green and blue rca outputs going to the inputs (av1) into my tv.
3. i also have two audio white and red outputs going from the digital cable box to my surround sound audio white and red inputs.
4. then moving on to my blue ray player i have one hdmi output cable going to my tv, (there are not other hdmi ports.
5. i have also have a coax cable going from the output of my blue ray player to the input of my surround sound system.
this set up works pretty well and i think the sound and picture is pretty darned good for the tv programs as well as blue ray movies. however, something just doesn't seem right. for one thing, the sound is good and coming from all speakers but when the characters are talking they sound kind of muddy at times and i have to turn the sound way up. then fill music comes in and it blasts you out of the chair. i have to sit with the controller turning the thing up and down all the time.
just wanted to know if i have this set up right or do i need to change something?
lots of thanks ahead of time,
