| Running video through new receiver changed picture -

hi everybody - hoping someone can offer some advice/knowledge:
i recently bought a yamaha htr-1650 (rx-v563) - nothing special but slowly working my way up, and this was a cheap opportunity to finally get lossless audio (lpcm through ps3). anyway, hooked everything up (ps3 and dvr into the 2 hdmi in's and out via the hdmi out) and it sounds great, but now the picture has totally changed. i had used professional calibration settings to set up the tv (lg30) and the picture was just the way i wanted it, but the receiver seems to be changing the video as it's going through - generally making it darker with a lot of black crush.
is their anything i can do about this? i don't mind running the dvr straight to the tv and running that audio to the receiver via optical (since i can't get lossless out of the dvr anyway), but is there anyway i can get the video from the ps3 directly to the tv and still keep the hd audio?
could i use an hdmi splitter, split the hdmi coming out of the ps3, run one to the receiver and the other directly to the tv, thereby only using the receiver for the sound?
any advice would be appreciated!
