Default Why don’t HDTVs have built in blu-ray players? - 09-05-2011, 10:52 PM

i was looking at different hdtvs during the past few days. i saw that none of the tvs i looked at had built in blu-ray players. my question is, why is that? why don't hdtvs have built in bluray players by now? over the past few decades, the general trend with technology has been to pack more and more function into smaller and smaller devices. that being said, why aren't we seeing that trend with built in bluray players yet?

hdtvs with built-in blu-ray are already here. perhaps the market has not made them especially popular but most of the large manufactures have produced them.

i can only assume that because people do not understand blu-ray and many do not understand the value of it, that many would not see the value of having it built into the tv.

cost is the number one reason.

i own a flat panel tv, and i already own a blu ray player. if i buy another bigger tv, i don't want to pay extra for that tv with blu ray player in it. the tv maker isn't going to give me that built in blu ray player for free, the cost is built in too. plus, if the player dies or blu ray gets an update like 3d, or some other new thing, i can just buy another player. if the built in player dies, nobody wants to ship the tv someplace or have a tech show up at the house. that's why dvd players in hdtvs never caught on big either.
