Default Multi-region dvd players? - 09-04-2011, 03:11 PM

hi, i was wondering about dvd players, i'm from new zealand, so region 4. i know they're around, and have seen one in store locally but 50% of people say it doesn't work, so i'm looking at more. a region 1 dvd disc set is coming soon, so i'm interested in getting a blu-ray multi-region dvd player, i would like for it to record but that is not so necessary. a friend of mine said that all dvd players are now multi-region, is this true? and would it count for blu-ray players? suggestions please.
thanks!

not true, dvd players still are region coded as well as blu-ray. many dvd players have hacks that will turn off the region coding. search for your model online.

all (legit) dvds are still region coded. blu-ray also uses regions, but they're slightly different from dvd's regions. also, not all blu-ray movies are region coded.

all dvd players are region-specific, unless it explicitly says ''''''region free.''''''

blu-ray players, likewise, are region specific. they will only play dvds and blu-rays from the regions they've been programmed to allow - again, unless it's a region free blu-ray player.

also, keep in mind that there is a difference in the video signal between different countries as well. north america and japan use ntsc, where as europe, parts of asia, and australia, use pal. this means even if you have a region free player, that can only output pal, your r1 dvds still won't be playable on it.

so if you want a truly global player, make sure it's region free and can convert between ntsc and pal. the best global player i've found is from an american company called oppo digital. their players cost a bit more than the $30 iview junk you see in asian grocery stores, but they're also considered some of the best players around, period. oh and they're also region free, can convert between ntsc and pal, and can also handle vcd, mp3, wmv, avi, etc... amazon sells oppo's products, so you may be able to order one that way.
