those home theater in a box are not flexible for adding or upgrading. they are mainly designed for you to watch a movie with surround sound. when one item fails you have to replace the whole system. some system do offer an optical audio input, check you system. if you have an optical audio input the you can use it to hear surround sound from your tv if you have an optical audio cable connected from the tv to the system. you connect the blu ray disc player directly to the tv using hdmi cable. if your system does not have an optical audio cable then you would not be able to hear any sound except what is in the system. hope this will help you out.

you do not give us model numbers so that we can look things up. we are not there and cannot examine what you have so we can't tell what can and cannot be hooked up.
however i can make this one general statement. if you have what it sounds like you have (a surround sound system with dvd player built in) then you have a htib (home theater in a box). with such a system you most likely will not be able to hook up your blu ray player and get 5.1 surround sound. these are notorious for not having very many hook ups for external devices and cannot be upgraded.
