it just means that the blu-ray player is capable of player 3d discs, and that the receiver is capable of receiving both the 3d picture and the audio via hdmi.

neither is necessary at the moment if you don't have a 3dtv, but in the near future almost all tvs will have 3d options so its not bad to future proof your purchase.

also, you don't technically need a 3d-capable receiver even if you have a 3dtv since you can still run an optical cable directly to any 3d receiver. but the optical cable compresses the audio slightly, where the hdmi audio is loss-less. many people wouldn't even notice the difference.

by not being to technical, a complete 3d hometheater system is composed of:
1. a 3d capable bu ray player
2. a 7.1 channel receiver with dtshd-ma and dolby tru-hd 3d audio capability
3. a 3d capable flats creen hdtv
4. 3d glasses depending on the kind of 3d tv
5. a 3d bku ray video software
usually 3d glasses are offered with the 3d hdtv.
to have an idea what 3d is, watch a 3d movie in a cinema near you/

i would not recommend any of those home theater in a box. they are not flexible for adding or upgrading. it is designed for you to watch movies with surround sound only. if it does not have an optical audio cable input then you would not be able to connecting and hear anything except from the dvd or blu ray disc movies. they are trying to push the 3d system, it can still play your blu ray and dvd movies. keep in mind to have 3d you will need a 3d hdtv, 3d blu ray disc player, 3d blu ray disc movie and 3d glasses. at this time there are only about 50 title in the market for 3d. i would recommend you look at an onkyo ht-s3400, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. this is much better than a home theater in a box. add a panasonic blu ray disc player model bd-65, 75 or 85 and you have a nice system for around $500. hope this will help you out.
