this question gets asked a lot. there is no correct way to make the movie fill the entire screen and you do not want it to. your ''''''widescreen'''''' tv is not widescreen. widescreen is 2.35:1 or 2.4:1. it's simple geometry, a picture having a shape that is 2.4 times wider than its height can not fit on a screen that is 1.78 times wider than its height. you either zoom it so the height fits and let part of the picture get cropped off on the ends and possibly miss the entire plot of the movie or you zoom it such that the width fits the screen and have black bars. you would not want it any other way, the black bars are a good thing, they indicate you are seeing the picture as it was meant to be seen in the theatre.
the very best things about blu-ray eclipsing the better resolution, eclipsing the better sound quality, the very best thing about blu-ray is that it maintains the same aspect ratio as the original theatrical release of the movie. even if blu-ray had lower picture quality and lower sound quality than regular dvd that one feature alone would make it worth it. so, in reality all the questions about the black bars are complaining about the very best thing about blu-ray. (sorry, my original response to your question was lost to my laptop updating and rebooting without permission so i'm in a bad mood)
regular dvds' use to be offered in the so called ''''''full screen''''''. don't you just love marketing! they take a bad thing, give it a name implying a good thing... ''''''full'''''' and convince the public they are somehow getting more. in reality the so called ''''''full screen'''''' version was a ''''''half picture'''''' version. almost half the picture was removed and thrown away just to fill those old 4:3 tv screens so people wouldn't complain about black bars. they used a technique called pan & scan to try to avoid losing the entire meaning of the movie but this was never really possible. i'll let mr. spock explain... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndjihyinwze
