not every movie are made the same way. you are going to see those black bars weather you have a 16 x 9 hdtv or not. hope this will help you out.

it's just a psychological thing. you see unused screen at the top and bottom and think you are missing something. actually you are not missing anything. the movie you are watching has a picture that is about 2.4 times wider than it is tall. you are watching it on a screen that is only about 1.77 times wider than it is tall. if you expand the movie picture vertically so it is as tall as your screen it will be too wide to fit on your screen. the only way to see the entire picture is to adjust the size such that the width of the picture fits your screen. this of course means that the picture is too small vertically to fill your screen. it's really very simple, it's the old ''''''you can't put a square peg in a round hole'''''' thing... except in this case it's you can't put a rectangular peg in a square hole.

one of two things could happen. they could downgrade movie cinemas to have 16:9 (1.77 to 1) screens and make going to the movies like just watching a really big tv. then later when the movie comes out on dvd it would exactly fit your tv. alternatively they could change the format of tv and start making tv's that are 2.4 times wider than they are tall so that your home theatre experience would more closely match your commercial cinema experience. of course unless you have a really big tv things like the news, sitcom's and other program material with focus on individual characters etc would appear really small with a lot of extra useless imagery out to the sides that the director of the program can't figure out what to do with.

right now the solution is to make tvs 1.77 times wider than they are tall. this is a good balance between the old style tv which was 1.33 times wider than tall and the movie experience which typically ranges from 1.85 times to 2.4 times wider than the height. it's a good balance, you just have to get passed the false impression that you are missing something when you see those black bars. the movie picture simply does not include any video information to put on those black bars.

there is a solution, you can get a projector with an anamorphic lens and video scaling along with a 2.4:1 projection screen with motorized masking on the ends. this gives you the ability to effectively change the shape of your screen to fit the image. it's called a ''''''cih'''''' or constant image height system. with a fixed shape tv however there isn't anything you can do. your program material includes everything from new 2.4:1 movies down to old 4:3 (1.33:1) tv programing so you simply can't make them all work on a screen that can not change its shape to accommodate them.

movies created for the movie theaters are shot in over a dozen different ratios of screen sizes.

older movie theaters used to have red velvet drapes that would move in to frame the image so people would not notice the 'black bars' in the theater. modern mulitplex theaters play games with lenses so you dont notice it.

your bluray player is trying to give you the exact image you would have seen in the theater and this will cause black bars on the top or even the sides.

but hdtv shows on bluray are shot in 16:9 ratio and will exactly fill your screen.

this is why you have the option for zooming - in case you watch a lot of shot-for-theater movies. when you switch - you often have to un-zoom.

most movie lovers keep their televisions un-zoomed so they get the image similar to the theater experience.

but it is your system - zoom all you want. just dont show it to your better-educated friends.
