Default Is the mp4 video format of lesser quality than avi and other formats? - 08-18-2011, 04:08 PM

it's a fairly simple question but i have not been able to find a proper answer. i would like to know if an mp4 video keeps all of the quality that the original video had. for example, if you were to burn a dvd or blu ray movie onto the computer and convert it to mp4, would you lose any quality in that transition? i understand mp4 is a compressed format but i still can't tell if there's a definite quality loss. (for example, converting a 720p .mkv file into mp4)

if you can't tell, then there is no question. the file type envelope and the amount of compression applied to the video in the envelope are two different things.

it is possible to have:
high compression, low quality, video
or
low compression, high quality, video...

inside mp4, mov or avi file types...

no, with a right software you can convert 720p hd mkv video to mp4 video without lossing any quality, like i used rz video converter, it can convert any video files and audio files between different formats without lossing any quality, such as convert hd mkv, avi or other formats video files to hd mp4 video files without lossing any quality, etc, yahoo or google search and download rz video converter, hope it can help you.

mpeg4 was designed specifically for live internet streaming at low bandwidths. it can be a poor choice for other applications where higher data bit rates are available. there is always a substantial quality hit when you convert a digital video recording in one codec to another. you get essentially the worst artifacts of both coding methods. the mkv may look ok by itself, but you might not be happy with the results transcoding to mp4 for anything other than low bandwidth (ie youtube) applications.
