if i get an external blu ray dvd player / writer and connect it to a mac mini could i watch hd movies on my tv. i would connect the mac mini connected to my hd tv using a hdmi cable. the internal dvd on mac minis only play standard dvd movies. any recommendations on players and software?

simplify. just buy a blu ray player & connect it directly to your tv. don't make it so complicated. btw, calling a blu ray player a ''''''blu ray dvd player'''''' makes as much sense as calling a dvd player a ''''''dvd cd player''''''. blu ray disks are not dvd's; just as dvd's are not cd's.
