Default Blu-ray movie quality? - 08-06-2011, 05:13 AM

alright, so i just purchased a 1080p tv, and it came equipped with a blu ray player. i was wondering how much better quality blu ray movies are as opposed to regular dvd's? i've never watched one before but have heard good things. thanks!

standard dvds can display a maximum resolution of 720 x 480 pixels. this standard is known as 480p and consists of 345,600 individually colored cells or pixels on the display surface. blu-ray discs use the 1080p format, which uses a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 for a total of 2,073,600 individual color cells or pixels. in terms of total pixels, blu-ray discs have a resolution that is six times greater than that of dvds.

the best practical way to determine the picture quality of a hd 1080p video is to watch it on a screen at least 40'''''' up. obviously the resolution numbers speaks by itself (dvd=480p-bluray=1080p) but if you watch it both on a small screen, the difference is not much significant.
