if your sony home theatre can not play mp4 format video, you can try another video format. maybe the mp4 format is not compatible with your sony home theatre. as for the blu-ray ripping, you can have a try of open blu-ray ripper. open blu-ray ripper can rip blu-ray movies from blu-ray discs or hard drive to almost all video and audio formats including avi. for more information about open blu-ray ripper, please go to http://www.open-bluray-ripper.com/

well, you should write the model of your sony home theater dvd player, then you will get a exact answer of your question, like my sony home theater dvd player which can play home profile divx or xvid avi video files and standard video dvd well, so if your sony home theater dvd player is similar with mine, i think you can follow me to use rz dvd creator to help you, it can convert any format videos to right profile divx or xvid avi video files(select ''''''divx-dvd'''''' or ''''''xvid-dvd'''''' as targrt format) for home theater dvd player which have divx or xvid or mpeg4 sign, it also can convert and burn any format video files to standard video dvd(select ''''''dvd'''''' as targrt format) for regular home dvd players, so with it you can easy to convert your mp4 format videos to right format for your sony home theater dvd player, and play it well on your sony home theater dvd players, you can yahoo or google search and download rz dvd creator, easy to use, hope it can help you.
by the way, i don't know the exact model of your sony home theatre dvd player, so can't give your a exact answer, maybe both divx or xvid codec avi files are right for your sony home theatre dvd player, or at least one of them should be right for your sony home theatre dvd player.

why did you buy a cheap dvd player based system when you wanted to play computer files?
(sigh)
go to best buy.
buy the new roku box for $89.
buy a 8 gig usb flash drive for $20
go to amazon.com
buy a mediabridge hdmi cable for $15
plug the hdmi cable into your tv and the other end into the roku box. copy your 1080p files straight to your usb drive. plug the drive into the roku box and turn it on. surprise - you can now play avi, wmv, mp4, mkv, flv and other file formats.
you can buy the more expensive models of ''''''media servers'''''' that go wireless to your computer so you dont have to even sneaker-net the files.
