m-audio makes excellent 2.0 speakers in your price range. audioengine makes amazing 2.0 speakers starting at $200 if you can save just a little more...
anyways, m-audio has three models of speakers in your price range if memory serves, the biggest being the av40s. each model consists of simply a pair of powered bookshelf speakers with a woofer and tweeter in a wooden enclosure. these really aren't much like regular computer speakers, they're more like regular speakers in general. normal computer speakers are plastic, these aren't.

those are m-audio's largest 2.0 computer speakers. they'll give you much more detailed, and much more energetic sound, than most other computer speakers on the market. i was looking at buying these when i was getting new speakers, but i chose audioengine's a2...

audioengine's a2 is better... but m-audio's av40s are still excellent. i sampled the av40s when i was deciding, and i would have been very happy with them. the reason i chose audioengine is because they were just a tiny bit better. the av40s are very punchy, and would sound excellent in most small-medium sized rooms. i would highly recommend the av40s. if you can make a bit more money for the purchase... then go for the audioengines.
good luck
