i have a 47'' vizio led tv and a $400 sharp aquos blu ray surround sound system, so not cheap stuff. for some reason my surround sound only works when i watch blu ray movies and not when i'm watching tv or playing on my 360.

at first it didn't work, then starting working for all 3 out of the blue for a few weeks, and has now stopped again.

i have an hdmi cable going from the blu ray player to hdmi 3 on the back of the tv, hdmi cable going from the cable box to hdmi 2 spot on the tv, and an hdmi cable going from the 360 to hdmi 1 slot on the back of the tv. there is only 1 hdmi input on the back of the blu ray player. so when i am either watching the tv or playing on my xbox i change the blu ray player input to analog and change it to disc when watching a blu ray movie. i have regular a/v cables going from the blu ray player to the back of the tv (audio out) to get sound to the tv when not watching a blu ray movie.

i have no idea why it won't work for the cable or xbox. i'm guessing it has to do with the receiver only having 1 hdmi input or with having standard red/white a/v cables going from the blu ray player to the tv but it doesn't explain why it worked for a few weeks then stopped again. please tell me what i can do to get all 3 devices to work. thanks for your help.

not surprised it does not work...

you really need a real av receiver with multiple hdmi inputs.
here are some ideas.
a) buy an hdmi switch: connect all devices (xbox, set-top) to the switch's input, and its output to the bd sur.
make sure you set the bd sur to hdmi input

b) connect all hdmi cables from each box to the tv (as you do now)
if the bd sur has a s/pdif input, connect s/pdif out from the device you want to use to that input. on the bd sur select to listen to that input (usually digital aux)

using the bd sur in analog input will only get you stereo.
you can remove the a/v cables from the bd player to the tv - stereo only!

some tvs allow you to input 5.1 audio over hdmi and then pass it out via their s/pdif. give it a try. connect s/pdif out from the tv to the bd player and see if it works.
