when i got the new true grit and put it in my pioneer bdp-51fd, it would not play and keeps having these two messages cannot play this disc and unknown disc. i have tried about 22 times in the player, the last few days up to early this morning. out of the 22 tries it only worked 3 times with no problems. when that first happened after two tries, i went and upgraded my firmware from 1.65 to 1.71, getting it at pioneer's site. but still the same problem happens.
i have also found this site with 970 page subpart all devoted to the player, here is the link to the site http://www.avsforum.com/avs-
vb/showthread.php?t=1054927&page=969. over there i go by the name syndicate2. you can go there and see some of my posts and others reply to it.
this is what some people have said about the problem.
bdmv memory clearing (tried that didn't have any and did help)
do a factory reset after a firmware update(did that and did help solve the problem)
these players are finicky (some worse than others) so even if they work in another player is not a guarantee they are ok for the pio and i would ask the shop/dealer to replace them.
1. try them in another player does not matter if it is a ps3 or a samsung or whatever this will at least establish to some degree if the discs are faulty or not.
2. it is known that on rare occasions some discs that are perfectly ok will not play on all players even from the same manufacturer it will play on some but not others, often a replacement disc will cure this problem (i think you will see reference to this in all manufacturers small print, for pioneer i think it is in the first few pages of the manual). there really is not a lot that can be done about this apart from trying a replacement disc or borrowing someone elses copy to try and then get yours replaced if it worked.
4. last but not least, your laser lens may be a little dirty with dust or small hair deposits, it happens over time, for some it happens earlier for some it takes a long time and is dependent on the use of the player, children or not, pets or not, geographical location etc. whether you need it or not get yourself a good for bluray lens cleaner as i mentioned in my earlier post to you. some don't beleive in them and i was skeptical till it helped me with a difficult dvd. make sure it clearly says bluray lens cleaner on the labelling do not use dvd or cd lens cleaners i also as previously mentioned would not bother with the maxell wind funnel design i really can't see it doing much good and maxell europe produced one with brushes instead.
i don't even know is it just this one i got my players hates, or all the ones that are out in stores my player hates.
if it just the one i got that my player hates then exchanging it is not a problem.
if it all the ones that are now in stores, then it is useless to exchange for a new one, it more of just get a refund or go for the dvd.
could it be that i might need to get one laser lens cleaner to clean the laser lens, and it solves the problem.
so what do you all think. my friend did try it on his ps3 and there was no problems at all. it played the first time putting it in. i still have yet to try my uncle's sony blu-ray player and see does have any problems. but all my other blu-rays plays fine like all the james bond ones, a-team, gone with the wind, face/off, the departed, miami vice, public enemies, the dark knight, planet earth, the untouchables, casino, blood diamond, life, bullitt, the fall, despicable me, batman begins, x-men origins: wolverine, snow white, beauty and the beast, fantasia/fantasia 2000 and knowing.
this problem is just frustrating, make which future blu-rays i get might or might have this same problem, once put in the player for the first time.
