you need a blu-ray drive on your computer to be able to play blu-ray movies.

upscale dvds? no such thing.. cd>dvd>blu-ray>holographic cds

all you need is a blu-ray player, not a video software.

dvd uses 480 lines. computer monitors have been running dvds fullscreen at 600 or 768 lines for the past 10+ years. so, upscaling is not a feature you have to look for. it just happens by default. as far as blu-ray goes, just look at the drive's specs in the store. they usually come with freebie software. you may need to upgrade your video card.

to be honest, aside from use as a recordable storage drive, there's really not much point in having a blu-ray built into your computer. drm is so stringent that you really can't do anything but watch movies. you might be better off just buying a cheaper blu-ray player and connecting it to the monitor if you have a spare hdmi.

first of all fantabul.... is wrong. the process of ''''''upconvert'''''' doesn't exist. ''''''upscale ''''''is the term that best describes the process since you cant convert a 480i to a 1080p no matter how hard you try, newer dvd players and blu ray players do take a 480i image and upscale it to 1080i so you get a larger more detailed picture but it will never truly be converted to 1080p (or 720p for that matter) because you cannot directly convert interlaced images to progressive, you can however downconvert from progressive to interlaced...but why would you want to. many companies have chosen to change the terminology from upconvert to upscale as it is a more accurate term and upconvert implies that you are truly converting something but you are not. you do not need software as it is a firmware process that does it and most, if not all, blu ray players, computer or tabletop, have that programming in the basic firmware protocol. will you notice a difference between 1080i and 1080p..ona a computer monitor? probably not since the lines of pixels in the monitor are so small but on a projector or a large (55'''''' or larger) tv monitor, you may notice some inferior picture. bottom line though is as long as you understand there will never be a true conversion from interlaced to progressive you will be fine.
