i'm not sure when we'll see consumer blu-ray/dvr player. sony just announced six different blu-ray recorder with no street date or release plan for the united states. most likely, the manufacturers don't see the demand for blu-ray recorder due to high penetration level of dvr and hd dvr in united states. you can take a look at the newest blu-ray recorder and their specs in the article.

i wouldn't count on sony (they make movies) bringing blu-ray recorders to usa. panasonic is the closest, they have them in australia and the uk. the movie industry is keeping blu-ray recorders out of the united states.

i really can't understand why blu-ray recorders are different for different countries. why can't they make the same kind of players all over the world? what are the reasons for it?

netgeek2,
the simple reason is that the television standards are different from country to country. but that is only part of the story. the more difficult reason is the standards agreed upon in that country for copyright protection or drm. the bbc worked with the media providers in the uk to work out a process see bbc - bbc internet blog: welcome to some new initials - drm, hdcp, dtcp and aacs!
it seems complicated but it allows the user to make one copy of encrypted movies to be used only on that recorder. this seems like an ok process, but i think the movie people in the usa still do not want blu-ray recorders at all here.
